Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's daring satire examines the tyranny of women's appearance along with the perceived horrors of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents an inspired acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, a mature celebrity forced into hosting a fitness program on television. This Mystery Thriller

This classic whodunit story stars Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a hiatus from reporting on global conflict to board an opulent ship accompanied by a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her spouse, plus additional affluent guests. Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship one night and everyone claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, on Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries in this clever paranormal narrative captured wholly from the perspective of the phantom. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the lens – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems protective of her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, with a twist you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Cage embraces his eccentric image through this meta comedy caper. He plays a self-obsessed film star playing himself who takes on a $1m payday to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Hired by government spies to gather intel on the potential kingpin, Cage's unconventional method proves useful. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's locked-room horror stands strong even without a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, several disappearances has left the local kids anxious. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. But the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers giving advice, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, late evening, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic regarding the shamed televangelist and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about monetising the people's religious faith. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, bad makeup and bad faith, yet Jessica Chastain manages to present the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4

The Spy Mystery

The current week's another release from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks worn by the actor's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a traitor within their ranks from a group of five – including is his own wife. The two stars are experts of understated style, leading to a delightful mind game of truth or lie unfolds. The supporting cast take part the clever spy entertainment.
